Going international: 60 institutions, 10 countries, and a fifth model family

Cette note n'est disponible qu'en anglais pour l'instant.

Until today, every institution in this pilot was American. That changes now: 30 new institutions across the UK, Germany, France, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Australia join the sample, bringing the total to 60 institutions and 80 documented vendor relationships across 10 countries.

The headline number doesn't survive the trip

At 28 US-only institutions, 100% of the pilot had a confirmed relationship with OpenAI and/or Anthropic. That was the site's central stat since launch. It does not hold internationally: across the full 60-institution sample, the figure is 69%.

The gap is regional, not random. Outside the US, Microsoft (via Azure OpenAI and Copilot) and Google (Gemini) have a materially stronger foothold — especially in UK and European banking and insurance. HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, Prudential plc, and Deutsche Bank all show confirmed Gemini relationships; AXA, Société Générale, Zurich Insurance, Swiss Re, Rabobank, and most of the UK insurers we found (Legal & General, Aviva) run on Microsoft. Japan looks different again — MUFG, Mizuho, and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group all show up across three or four families simultaneously, partly through a joint Anthropic-Claude-Mythos cybersecurity access shared by all three megabanks.

We think this is itself a real finding, not noise: US financial institutions cluster on OpenAI and Anthropic more tightly than the rest of the world does. Whether that reflects US firms' Silicon Valley proximity, procurement history, or something else is outside what this index measures — but the pattern is now visible in the data, not just asserted.

A fifth model family: Mistral AI

Three major European banks — HSBC, BNP Paribas, and ABN AMRO — have confirmed, sourced relationships with Mistral AI, the French model lab. This wasn't a one-off: ABN AMRO's own framing of its partnership explicitly cites reducing reliance on non-European AI technology, and HSBC's self-hosted deployment of Mistral's commercial models sits alongside its existing Gemini relationship, not in place of it.

That's enough of a recurring, sourced pattern that Mistral AI now joins OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Microsoft as a fifth tracked model family across the whole site — the data explorer, the live relationship graphs, and the chat assistant all reflect it.

What we verified ourselves, not just took on faith

Every one of the 33 new relationships in this update was checked against its primary source before being added: official press releases from HSBC, Allianz, Deutsche Bank, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and others, or reputable trade press (Nikkei Asia, American Banker, Microsoft's own customer-story pages) for the rest. A handful of weaker leads — Barclays' Copilot rollout, UOB's Copilot pilot — are marked Probable rather than Confirmed, consistent with how this index has always handled thinner sourcing.
